MSF: Doctors Without Borders Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) aka Doctors Without Borders is an international humanitarian aid organisation that provides emergency medical assistance to populations in danger in more than 70 countries. In carrying out humanitarian assistance, MSF seeks also to raise awareness of crisis situations; MSF acts as a witness and will speak out, either in private or in public about the plight of populations in danger for whom MSF works. How have they been involved in Myanmar cyclone disaster relief? Immediately after the cyclone hit several regions in Myanmar, MSF teams in the country began assessing and responding to the needs of the population in Yangoon and the neighbouring areas. MSF teams, who are able to circulate freely, have distributed food and plastic sheeting, and have begun treating water in Yangoon. In the outskirts of Yangoon, MSF organized the distribution of plastic sheeting, jerrycans and fuel for water pumps to some 5,000 people. IRC: International Rescue Committee The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a critical global network of first responders, humanitarian relief workers, healthcare providers, educators, community leaders, activists, and volunteers. Working together, they provide access to safety, sanctuary, and sustainable change for millions of people whose lives have been shattered by violence and oppression. The IRC is on the ground in 25 countries, providing emergency relief, relocating refugees, and rebuilding lives in the wake of disaster. The International Rescue Committee has dispatched an emergency team to Myanmar to rapidly assess needs and lay the groundwork for urgent assistance for people made homeless by the weekend's devastating cyclone. World Vision is coordinating with authorities to explore an airlift of emergency supplies into the country from one of its global warehouses. Whether refugees are fleeing war or drought is destroying farmland, hunger is often the first emergency. The hungry look to WFP for the first response. The World Food Programme has sent four aircraft loaded with critically needed food aid and other relief items for thousands of people struck by Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar. The UN Refugee Agency is poised to deliver 22 tonnes of emergency relief supplies to Myanmar through the border crossing from Mae Sot in north-west Thailand. CARE has been working in the country for 14 years and is positioned to provide direct assistance to survivors in two of the hardest hit areas. At present the provision of shelter and safe drinking water are the highest priorities followed by food and sanitation. Despite being subject to the great difficulties and damage to property – the roof was torn off the Regional Headquarters building – members of The Salvation Army in Yangon have been providing cooked meals from their own store of food for those who are desperately in need.
